Adopting a rescue cat is a wonderful decision and a lifelong commitment. To make sure every adoption is a happy one, we ask that you:
- Provide a safe, permanent home for the life of your cat
- Have a suitable space and environment for a cat
- Cover ongoing costs, including vet care, food, litter, and toys
- Have the support of everyone in your household - people and pets
- Have permission to keep a pet if you rent, share, or live in a strata scheme
- Have a plan in place if your living circumstances change
- Show photo ID to our Adoption Coordinator
- Allow a home visit from a BMD volunteer as part of the meet and greet
- Commit to a trial settling-in period to make sure the match is right for everyone
We also strongly encourage keeping cats indoors. If your cat goes outside, a harness or enclosed cat run keeps them safe and protects local wildlife.
Every BMD rescue cat or kitten is:
- Vet checked
- Desexed
- Microchipped
- Vaccinated
- Treated for fleas and worms
- Raised in a loving foster home with a dedicated volunteer carer

Adopting a rescue cat through BMD is a straightforward and supported process. Here are the seven steps.
1. FIND YOUR CAT
Browse our available cats on Facebook, call Chris, or visit the Lawson Pet Health Hub. Take your time. Think about the cat that best suits your lifestyle, home, and family.
Thinking of adopting two cats? Bonded pairs and double adoptions are encouraged and come with a significantly reduced adoption fee.
2. INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Every BMD cat receives a health and behaviour assessment. We will share what we know about your chosen cat, including how they interact with children, other pets, and different home environments.
3. ADOPTION ENQUIRY
Ready to take the next step? Simply get in touch with whoever you connected with first - whether that was through Facebook, Chris, or the Lawson Pet Health Hub. They will guide you through the next steps.
4. MEET AND GREET
We will arrange a meet-and-greet at your home. Ideally, all household members will be present. A BMD volunteer will bring your potential new feline family member to you. This is also a chance to ask questions and make sure your home is cat-friendly.
5. TRIAL SETTLING-IN PERIOD
The meet-and-greet marks the start of a trial settling-in period. This gives everyone time to adjust and make sure the match feels right.
Please keep in mind that rescue cats have often had disrupted lives. Patience goes a long way. Most cats simply need time and space to feel safe and settled in their new home.
The length of the trial period is flexible and can be discussed with your BMD Adoption Coordinator.
6. ADOPTION CONTRACT AND FEES
Happy to go ahead? You will sign an adoption contract and pay the applicable adoption fee. Our fees help cover the veterinary and care costs involved in rescuing and rehabilitating every cat.
7. WELCOME HOME
Congratulations and welcome to the BMD family. Your new feline companion is officially home.
Remember that every cat is unique and settling in can take time. Our volunteers are always happy to hear from you if questions come up along the way.
The standard BMD adoption fee is $260 per cat.
Adopting two cats together? The fee for each cat is significantly reduced. Ask us about bonded pairs.
Your decision to adopt a rescue cat changes two lives - yours and theirs. BMD volunteers are with you every step of the way to make sure the journey is a happy one for your whole family, two-legged and four.
If you are unable to continue caring for your cat and you live within the BMD service area, we may be able to help through our Assisted Rehoming support service.
