Blue Mountains & Districts Cat Welfare Group rescue cats are cared for entirely by private volunteer foster carers - No shelters.
Every cat in our care lives in a real home with a dedicated foster carer.
That home could be yours.

Every week, cats and kittens across the Blue Mountains, Lithgow, Bathurst, and the Central West need rescue and care. Many are injured, malnourished, or deeply unsocialised. Some have never known a safe, calm environment.
A major and constant problem is a lack of foster homes.
Without enough foster homes, we cannot take in further rescue cats. It is that simple.
You may be wondering:
- Do I have enough experience to foster a cat?
- What if the cat is unwell or difficult?
- Can I foster if I already have pets?
- What does it actually cost me?
- What happens if I need help?
These are exactly the right questions. Keep reading.
BMD Cat Welfare has been rescuing and rehoming cats across the Blue Mountains region for years. Our foster network is the backbone of everything we do.
We know that many people who want to foster have never done it before. That is completely fine. Our experienced volunteers will guide you every step of the way. You will not be left to figure things out on your own.
We match cats to foster carers based on your experience level, living situation, and availability.
Whether you have fostered before or this is your first time, there is a place for you in our network.
You provide a safe, comfortable indoor space and attend to the basics - feeding, grooming, and litter. Some cats settle in quickly. Others need more time and patience. Either way, your calm and consistent presence is what makes the difference.
Outcomes:
You monitor your foster cat's health, administer any medications as needed, and report concerns to your BMD contact promptly. You also provide transport to vet visits and adoption meet-and-greets. BMD covers fuel costs.

Christine, Senior Foster Carer

I make a difference. I see cats rescued from terrible situations recover and flourish, then be adopted into loving homes. I cannot explain it - it brings tears to my eyes. I am happy and a little sad as I let them go. Take little Cricket, found in a car engine, so starving and tiny. Like so many others I have fostered, Cricket is now adopted and thriving in her forever home.
Ethan, Foster Carer

Foster caring is not always easy. People overbreed and mistreat cats without caring about the consequences. But getting through to a cat with a lot of trouble trusting people is fantastic. It is like speaking an alien language. Once they realise they are safe, they become happy and healthy and start to trust again. That means the world.
Krystelle, Foster Carer

I fell into foster caring accidentally - we had space and decided we could help. We tend to take on complicated cats with medical or behavioural issues. But I regularly see our big ex-tomcats take tiny kittens under their wing for warmth and safety. Cats are incredibly caring creatures. Most eventually learn they are safe and loved.
Q: Do I need experience to become a foster carer?
A: No. Most of our foster carers started with no experience at all. We match cats to your comfort level and provide full support and guidance. You will never be left to manage on your own.
Q: Can I foster if I already have cats or other pets at home?
A: Yes, in many cases. We assess each situation individually. Some foster cats need a separate space away from resident pets, particularly for medical or behavioural reasons. We will talk this through with you before placing a cat in your care.
Q: How long does fostering last?
A: It varies. Some cats are ready for adoption within a few weeks. Others need several months of care. We will give you as much information as we can upfront and keep you informed throughout.
Q: What if my foster cat becomes unwell?
A: Contact your BMD foster coordinator straight away. All veterinary care is coordinated and covered by BMD. You are not responsible for costs and you are never managing health concerns alone.
Q: Will fostering cost me anything?
A: No. BMD provides all food, litter, veterinary care, and medications. We also reimburse fuel costs for approved travel such as vet visits and adoption meet-and-greets.
Q: What areas do you cover?
A: Our foster network covers the Blue Mountains, Lithgow, Bathurst, and the Central West. If you are outside these areas, get in touch and we will do our best to help.
Fostering saves lives. If you have space, time, and a willingness to care, we would love to hear from you.
