Introduction to BMD Cat Adoption Process Guide:

At BMD Cat Welfare, the mission of our cat adoption process is driven by care, love, and dedication. Our primary focus is to ensure that you take home and adopt the right rescue cat for you, your home, your family and your lifestyle and that our treasured furry friend finds their happy, loving, forever home.

Essential Requirements for Adopting a Rescue Cat from BMD:

To ensure the well-being and happiness of our rescue cats, we kindly ask that you meet the following essential requirements:

  1. Provide a permanent and safe home for the life of any adopted rescue cat or kitten.
  2. Maintain a suitable space and environment for a cat.
  3. Cover ongoing costs of veterinary fees, food, litter, toys, and all other expenses of having a rescue cat.
  4. Allocate adequate time for a companion cat or kitten.
  5. Obtain acceptance from all household members (human and animal) for an adopted rescue cat or kitten.
  6. If you rent, share, or live in a strata scheme, ensure you can have a pet and obtain permission if necessary.
  7. Make appropriate plans for your pet if your living conditions change.
  8. Undertake a meet-and-greet accompanied by a home visit assessment from a BMD Cat Welfare volunteer.
  9. Participate in an adoption trial settling-in period to ensure the rescue cat or kitten is the right fit for your family. Please note that this is a crucial step as it allows for a compatibility check. However, we kindly ask that you carefully consider and be prepared to commit to adopting, as these cats have generally had disrupted lives, and further disruptions can distress them.
  10. Show photo ID to the Adoption Coordinator.

In line with our commitment to safety and environmental preservation, we strongly advocate for keeping cats indoors. If you allow your cat to go outdoors, please ensure they are supervised on a harness or within an enclosed cat run.

Additionally, we want to emphasise that it takes time for cats to settle and become comfortable in new environments. We kindly ask adopters to give their newly adopted cats ample time to adjust and not to expect instant settling. Each cat has its unique personality and needs, so patience and understanding are key factors in building a strong bond.

Thank you for considering adoption and for understanding the importance of meeting these essential requirements. Together, we can provide loving forever homes for our rescue cats while ensuring their well-being and happiness.

SEVEN STEP - CAT ADOPTION PROCESS:

1. Selecting the Perfect Cat:

Every cat is unique, just like every potential pet parent. Take your time to browse through our Cats for Adoption.

Think about the cat that will fit your lifestyle and family best. Remember, owning a cat requires care and affection despite their often independent demeanour.

Consider adopting two cats together! Double the fun, double the love and a significantly reduced adoption fee up front!

2. Initial Assessment:

All cats receive a behaviour and health assessment. We'll offer advice about your chosen feline's compatibility with different home environments, such as those with small children or other resident animals.

3. Adoption Enquiry:

Once you've found a potential furry companion from the Cats for Adoption, start the adoption process by filling out and submitting our Cat Adoption Enquiry form. You can also speak to the listed carer for a broader overview of the cat you have in mind.

Ensure that you read all the essential requirements and are in a position to move forward with an adoption.

4. Meet and Greet:

After receiving your adoption enquiry, we'll arrange a meet-and-greet with your chosen kitty at your home. All household members should ideally be present.

A volunteer will bring your potential new feline family member to your home. The meet-and-greet marks the commencement of the trial settling-in period and is an opportunity for you to ask further questions and for the carer to ensure that your home is cat-friendly.

5. Trial Settling-in Period:

Adoption is a big decision. To ensure a successful match, we provide a trial settling-in period. This trial period commences as you take charge of your new kitty at the meet-and-greet.

The settling-in period can be flexible depending on your needs. You can discuss this with the carer during the meet-and-greet.

If, after this time, the adoption feels right for you, the process can proceed. If not,  we will assist in finding a more suitable feline friend.

While each adoption begins with a trial period to ensure a successful match between the cat and their new family. During this time, it is essential for potential adopters to carefully consider their decision and be prepared to fully commit to adopting. The cats we rescue have often experienced disrupted lives, and additional disruptions can cause distress. Therefore, we kindly ask adopters to be mindful of this and provide these cats with the stability they need.

Furthermore, it's important to give the cats sufficient time to settle and become comfortable in their new environments. It's unrealistic to expect them to instantly adapt and feel at home. Each cat has its own unique personality and requires patience and understanding during the adjustment period. By allowing them the time and space they need, you give them the best chance to thrive in their new forever home.

6. Signing the Adoption Contract:

Once you are happy to go ahead with the adoption, you will sign an adoption contract and pay the applicable fees.

Our nominal adoption fees help meet veterinary and associated costs in rescuing and caring for our cats and kittens.

7. Congratulations! On Your New Furry Companion:

Now, the journey truly begins. Welcoming a new furry family member can alter home dynamics, so it's important to remember that each cat is as unique as their new family.

Even though you have officially adopted your feline companion, BMD volunteers are happy for you to keep in touch and ask questions as they may arise.

Cat Adoption Fees:

Generally the Cat Adoption Fee for BMD is $260 per cat.

If two cats are adopted together, the fee for each cat can be significantly reduced.
